We are interested in how ideologies of gender structure leisure, bearing in mind the fact that gender ideologies are cut across by class, race and other divisions. We are concerned with the way in which leisure as a category of experience is itself gendered, the way in which leisure is, in Johnson's (1987, p. 214) terms, 'a grossly ideological category based firmly on a male and relatively affluent experience' . In discussing ideology we do not wish to imply that all women are identical recipients of a dominant ideology imposed from above (see also Perkins, 1979).

More than this, we are actively involved in the reproduction of society and its inequalities. Not only is leisure divided along lines of class, race, gender, age and sexual orientation, and more, but leisure must also be seen as an area of life where these divisions are negotiated, redefined or reproduced. Our primary concern is to understand the relationship between leisure, both conceptually and experientially, and the maintenance of inequality between men and women. One starting point for this is in an examination of the concept of hegemony.

The leisure activities in which women did engage were also influenced by the constraints outlined above. The results for home-based leisure showed that 95 per cent of respondents watched television, 75 per cent did reading, and 50 per cent did sewing, knitting and crafts, whereas only 23 per cent played sport or went to night clubs and discos. Inexpensive, home-based pursuits were the most popular activities, and those which involved safe transport, independent outings and high costs were the most difficult to sustain.
