Pontian and Hippolytus (see August 13), from Sardinia and gave them fitting burial in Rome. When the persecution of Decius (emperor 249-251) broke out in 250, Pope Fabian was arrested and was among the first to die (January 20, 250), most probably while in prison, and probably because of maltreatment. His body was placed in the papal crypt in the cemetery of Callistus and sometime later was transferred to the Basilica of St. Sebastian, where it was discovered in 1915. Fabian was a Roman and became pope on January 10, 236. Only a few things are actually known about him. It was he who divided Rome into seven ecclesiastical districts, with a deacon in charge of each, and it was he who brought the bodies of the martyrs Sts.
