The rings have a biomass considerably higher than that in the surrounding sea, and the biological contrast is especially marked in the distribution of slope forms such as Nematoscelis megalops (Wiebe and Boyd, 1978). Anticyclonic or warm core rings also form on the coastal side of the Gulf Stream. They are believed to form as frequently as the cold ones, but only last up to 6 months because of the restricted area. Most appear to rejoin the Gulf Stream near Cape Hatteras. The meanders are generated by a general instability in the current and may also be triggered by pulsations in the strength of the Florida Current.
It does not require the assignment of individual free ion activity coefficients but assumes that these are identical in solutions of the same ionic strength, independently of composition. 2. While there are differences in detail, the speciation broadly resembles that obtained in the original ionpair model of Garrels and Thompson (1962). Extension of the model to take account of effects of temperature and pressure over the oceanic range (Kester and Pytkowicz, 1970) has led to controversy (Millero, 1971, 1974; Pytkowicz, 1972) concerning the assumptions involved.
Measure ment of the total dissolved material is difficult in practice, because of changes in the composition of the residual solids on drying, and is in any event unsuited for routine shipboard measurements. In the early work of the Knudsen Committee, salinity was defined gravimetrically and the relationship between salinity, defined in this way, and chlorinity was established by analysis of a series of samples of varying salinity. The relationship between salinity and sigma-o was also established.
