The reaction among the state’s newspapers was mostly anger. The St. Joseph Gazette commented, “Should the miscreants [criminals] be overtaken it is not probable that a jury will be required to try them. ” The Kansas City Times, meanwhile, noted the difficulty of catching the brothers. It stated, “They know every foot-path and by-road. . ” According to some reports, the James brothers thought it wise to leave Missouri after Sheets’s death. If true, it is likely that they headed to Texas or Mexico.

The outlaw, however, may have invented this reason to make it seem as though the robbery was politically motivated. In fact, the cashier was named John W. Sheets and had no connection to Anderson. The robbery began with the Jameses’ standard ploy. Jesse entered the bank and asked for change for a $100 bill. Sheets was counting the change when Jesse pulled a revolver and shot him in the heart and head. He then held the gun on the only witness, a lawyer who happened to be in the bank. Frank entered the bank, and the brothers scooped up what they could.
