He spent the rest of his long life in these offices, serving both Luis Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and his predecessor, Bishop Francisco de *Mendoza y Cordoba, as vicar-general. The Palencia chapter minutes record the date of his death. It was from November 1506 that he added 'Fernandez' to his name, possibly to lessen the converse overtones of plain 'Alonso de Madrid'. Alonso's translation of Erasmus' Enchiridion FERNANDEZ - by far the most important translation of any work by Erasmus to appear in Spain - was completed by the start of 1525 and after initial difficulties was soon to enjoy extraordinary success.

The Fevijn family was related to the Hedenbault family, and both were traditionally employed in the service of the dukes of Burgundy. When Jan lost his father at an early age, he and his sister were taken in charge by Filips van Hedenbault and, after Filips' death, by his brother, Karel van *Hedenbault. Thus from his childhood Jan had an intimate association with the Prinsenhof, the old ducal residence at Bruges, where Karel van Hedenbault lived and extended hospitality to Erasmus on several occasions.
