Look for a ‘win–win’ resolution in which the teacher can accept support and the learning experience of the pupils can be improved. You may find that in this initial discussion, the teacher blames the whole problem on individual pupils or groups of pupils. For example: ‘6F are the worst class I have ever taught. They are the group from hell and I have no control over them. ’ It is probably unhelpful at this stage to enter into a lengthy debate with the member of staff about the precise misdeeds of the class or individual pupils, although the teacher may need to ‘vent’ some anxieties and frustrations.
