Put all the bits of paper in a bag and then draw out four or five and see what you get. ᭤ Cut out some pictures from magazines or bits of clip art and stick them on a sheet. Here’s one I prepared earlier – Figure 4. Pick two things. If those two things were in your story, what would the story be about? So for example if I picked the mask and the pile of money my story could be about a masked thief who wanted to steal some money. Now pick a third thing (or get a friend to pick it for you). If that were also in your story, what would the story be like now?

The party went waterfalling late into the night. Another Dylan Thomas trick is to invent short descriptive phrases. In his story The Followers one of the main characters walks into a pub and sees ‘port-and-lemon women’ sitting at the bar. What does that phrase do in your imagination? What could it mean? To my mind it means women who are drinking port-and-lemons, but I also think Dylan Thomas is talking about the kind of women who sit by themselves drinking port-and-lemons (and if you’re wondering what kind of women he might mean, go and ask your teacher about that).

Being able to do both is useful. But if you tend only to have either big ideas or small ideas, no worries because we’ll practise the skill of doing both-big-and-small. Before we go any further though, here are a few guidelines to bear in mind: ᭤ If you struggle to have ideas it isn’t because you can’t have ideas. Our brains are built to have ideas. You just need to learn a few tricks and techniques. ᭤ You know that stories have a beginning, a middle and an end. But that’s when they’re finished.
