Boreal Birds of North America: A Hemispheric View of Their

Attaining from inside Alaska throughout Canada to Labrador and Newfoundland, North America’s boreal woodland is the biggest wasteland quarter left on the earth. it really is severe habitat for billions of birds; greater than three hundred species usually breed there. After the breeding season, many boreal birds migrate to seasonal habitats around the usa, Mexico, the Caribbean, and imperative and South the USA. This quantity brings jointly new learn on boreal chook biology and conservation. It highlights the significance of the sector to the worldwide avifauna and to the connectivity among the boreal woodland and ecoregions during the Americas. The contributions exhibit a different set of views at the migration, wintering ecology, and conservation of chook groups which are tied to the boreal woodland in ways in which would possibly not were formerly thought of.

Petroleum Extraction Road-building and seismic exploration for oil and gas extraction create linear disturbances resulting in both habitat loss and fragmentation. Since much exploration is carried out in winter, seismic lines often run through wetlands. In Alberta, Canada, there is also currently no limit to the cumulative density of seismic lines allowed (Schneider et al. 2003), and in 1999 100,000 km (63,000 mi) of seismic lines had been approved (Lee and Boutin 2006). 5 to 10 km per km2 were also observed in 98% of the townships in northeast Alberta by 2001.

However, information about hydrologic connectivity across the boreal forest is quite limited (Foote and Krogman 2006, but see Devito et al. 2005, Petrone et al. 2007). Improving our knowledge of factors affecting wetland productivity, particularly when examined in the context of land-use changes known to reduce duck populations, will likely lead to more effective habitat conservation. When planning for WBF conservation, we also need to recognize that contemporary spatial distributions and abundances of waterfowl in the boreal forest provide limited information regarding population dynamics with which to guide biological planning efforts.

Our preliminary analyses of BPOP survey data indicate that even when scaup populations were high in the 1970s, Ͼ75% of their western boreal population occurred at densities of Ͻ10 pairs per square mile, and 50% were in regions of Ͻ5 pairs per square mile. Spatial distribution patterns of other waterfowl taxa have not yet been fully examined, but it seems that while the western boreal forest accounts for a large portion of the continental breeding population of some species, they tend to occur at low densities across this large area.
