A model of this sort (loosely borrowed from Ratcliff, 1978) might look like Fig. 4. The idea of a limited-capacity parallel model is that all items in the display are processed at once. Evidence accumulates at each location for the presence of a target or non-target item. Search terminates when one item crosses the "yes" threshold or when all items cross the "no" threshold.

In recent decades, researchers have begun making direct measurements of neural activity in visual areas of macaque monkeys trained to attend to certain stimuli and ignore others (Moran & Desimone, 1985). Other researchers record tiny changes in electrical potentials on the scalps of human beings, comparing neural responses to attended and unattended stimuli (so-called event related potentials or ERPs). Results from both ERPs and single-unit recordings show that the neural activity in brain areas involved in perceptual analysis is often substantially greater for attended stimuli compared to unattended stimuli.
