For her daughter, she asked that her father in Mississippi rescue her from the punishing climate that had made her so ill. These choices represented important crossroads in Walker’s life. She also decided to leave her agent, Monica McCall, who had been her last link with Muriel Rukeyser. These decisions meant that, for Walker, her art was more important than her personal connections: understandable from the artist’s perspective, but not necessarily from that of the spouse, or the child, or the mentor.

The modern American women’s movement, however, was born out of the economics of World War II, when large numbers of women replaced men in factories across the United States.
