In 1962, he began a syndicated newspaper column that was written for the sole purpose of presenting his conservative points of view on major issues. In 1966, the weekly program Firing Line, on which Buckley discussed with guests a sociological or political issue, aired on WOR-TV. Five years later the Public Broadcasting System purchased the program, and Buckley became a national celebrity.

Although he continued to write about other countries over the years, he also wrote several books about the history of Connecticut and New England. In 1960, his book, Brass-Knuckle Crusade: The Great KnowNothing Conspiracy, 1820–1860, was published. The book was well received by critics primarily because Beals had presented an insightful examination of party politics. Beals died on June 26, 1979. He had written almost fifty books and had contributed numerous entries and chapters to others. However, he is remembered for his penetrating articles and books about various countries.
