In the teaching of literacy we use shared reading and shared writing as powerful teaching strategies during which we read and write in front of the children, modelling the ways readers read and the purposes for which texts are written. We draw attention to the features of texts – how they are constructed and written. We model an enthusiasm for reading and writing. These two strategies lie at the heart of high quality literacy lessons. Guided reading and guided writing In guided sessions the children read and write.

Initially this use may be shaky, as is all new learning, but the only way to embed it is through further use. The worksheet may be completed correctly (and has its place as a tool for children to focus on something specific) but it is only when a child attempts to use their learning in their own compositions that they are forced to grapple with it properly.
